Dionysos
Bachelor assignment : Illustrate a myth. I chose Dionysos, greek divinity of vine and wine-making, theater, vegetation, festivity, ritual and religious madness, as well as the leader of the Maenads.
All the elements refer to his cult :
- The very top depicts leaves from a fig tree, which was sacred to him. The fruit is on the left of the illustration.
- Two depiction of an older, bearded dionysos, based on archeological findings.
- In the center sits a young Dionysos with his divine wife Arizdne. She is the graddaughter of the Sun Titan Helios and a princess of Crete he married when Theseus left her on Naxos.
- Above them is a stylized pine cone, usually present at the top of his staff (thyrsos) hang grapes and on the sides of the main illustration twin snakes entertwine.
- On the left is a stem of wild fennel, with which the thyrsos (staff) of Dionysos and his follower was made.
- On the bottom two dionysian theater masks frame a pair of panthers and a bull head, refering both the animal associated to Dionysos but also his wife Araidne's half brother, Asterion (the Minotaur).
- Both Dionysos and Ariadne's names are written in greek.
